Museum of the Rockies at Montana State University
Some of the most memorable parts of my family's vacations have been the museums we've visited. Years later the kids still remember different exhibits that impressed them the most. However not all museum are the same. If you're planning on driving well out of your way to check out an attraction it's nice to have the attraction live up to your expectations. The "Museum of the Rockies" is one that you won't be disappointed in.
The museum is divided into four main sections:
- The Yellowstone Children's discovery Center. One of the newest sections the children's discovery center opened its doors in the summer of 2010. This is a hands on exhibit meant to get the kids involved in various activities. This is a great way for the kids to burn off a little energy after a long days driving. The purpose of the exhibit is to introduce children to science as well as give them an interactive experience where they pretend to camp, fish, hike, and even be an Yellowstone park employee.
- The Taylor Planetarium. Planetariums are always a big hit with the kids. Remember back to the first time you sat back in an exploratorium chair, the light went dim and you were swept away by a dazzling display of the night sky that seemed so close that you could touch it? If you don't, then it's time to make some new memories! The Taylor Planetarium has a live narrated tour of the night sky with a laser light show. There is also a special children's show on Saturdays.
- The Siebel Dinosaur Complex. One of the main highlights of the museum! Be taken back in time with this incredible exhibit that combines dinosaur sculpture, sound effects and hundreds of fossils. The research of world-renowned paleontologist Dr. Jack Horner (advisor of the Jurassic Park Films) brings the dinosaurs to life helping the viewer get the feel of how these massive animals really lived. The Siebel Dinosaur Complex also houses the largest dinosaur skull ever found, a massive T-rex! This exhibit of rare fossils is a must see attraction.
- Montana History. Making the history books come to life! The history exhibit takes you back to the days of the Montana pioneers to see how life was when Montana was just being settled. The Montana History exhibit also delves into the lives of the "original settlers", the native Indians, tracing their origins and development through Montana. This valuable resource also describes the journeys of Lewis and Clark as they passed traveled Montana.
